PG16- The Sword of Shannara (v), The Elfstones of Shannara (v)
Terry Brooks is a well known author in the world of fantasy. Best known for his Shannara series, he has also written another series called The Magic Kingdom of Landover.
In most of his books, it is the male/s who are the heroes. When he does use a female, there is always a male in an equally strong role. The one exception seems to be the Elf Queen of Shannara, where the hero is Wren, but even here, she has a male companion who stars nearly as much as she. This male domination does nothing to detract from the books themselves, however, and often adds some interesting character interactions. In both series, there is an obvious good versus evil battle going on, with a clear line defining the two.
The Magic Kingdom of Landover series, in presentation as well as reading, seems aimed at a younger audience, with a talking dog, a bumbling magician, and a knight in shinning armour. The plots are simpler, and there is not as much of a foreboding presence as is found in the Shannara series.
With some very interesting characters and plots, as well as a reasonably good description of landscape and surroundings, Terry Brooks books are well worth the read if you enjoy fantasy.
Shea Ohmsord's life is thrown into turmoil when Allanon, the mysterious wanderer of the four lands comes searching for him. Along with his brother Flick, Shea is forced to flee his home in Shady Vale. Being the last true descendant of Jerle Shanara he must journey to find the sword, the only weapon powerful enough to defeat the Warlock Lord. The Sword of Shannara is focused mainly on the plot to save the world in a quest-style adventure. The first of an excellent series.
The Elfstones of Shannara- For as long as most of those living could remember, the Ellcrys had been looked after by the Chosen. What the tree stood for most no longer remembered. It was tradition, and the elves where not ones to break such a tradition. Then one day it was discovered that the Ellcrys was dying. Before anything more than the fact that only one of the Chosen could save it, the Chosen where killed. With the weakening of the Ellcrys, the barrier holding back hordes of demons also weakened and allowed three to slip through. The Dagda Mor, the Reaper and the Changeling. Now it was up to Wil Ohmsford, son of Shea, to find the one Chosen who had not been killed. One who had renounced her place and all that it stood for. With the help of Allanon, and the elfstones, he sets out to find Amberle and help restore the Ellcrys to full health. The second book in the Shannara series, The Elfstones of Shannara is full of mystery and suspense, and well worth reading.
